Smashing the Plateau

Better Decisions Lead to Better Outcomes

About

Smashing the Plateau helps experienced independent professionals make better decisions so they can build businesses that support the lives they want.

You didn't become independent because you lacked knowledge. You bring years, often decades, of expertise, judgment, and experience to your business.

What changes when you leave an organization is the environment around you.

Suddenly, you may find yourself:

  • Deciding alone. Making important decisions without trusted colleagues to test your thinking.

  • Second-guessing yourself. Spending too much time reconsidering decisions you once would have talked through with others.

  • Missing perspective. Lacking the outside viewpoints that could help you see an opportunity or problem differently.

  • Carrying the responsibility. Making decisions that affect both your business and your life largely on your own.

Much of the support that once surrounded you has disappeared.

Smashing the Plateau exists to help replace what was lost.

We create opportunities for experienced independent professionals to reflect more deeply, benefit from perspectives beyond their own, and use collective intelligence to make better decisions.

How We Got Here

Smashing the Plateau grew out of founder David Shriner-Cahn's own experience leaving corporate life and building an independent business.

Smashing the Plateau grew out of founder David Shriner-Cahn's own experience leaving corporate life and building an independent business.

At first, the transition seemed straightforward. Leaving an organization meant learning how to start, run, and grow a business without the infrastructure that had previously been available. The original focus of Smashing the Plateau reflected that understanding: helping corporate refugees navigate the transition to entrepreneurship.

But over time, that understanding of the challenge became deeper.

Through hundreds of conversations on the Smashing the Plateau podcast and years of working with independent professionals in our community, we began to see a consistent pattern.

The people we encountered were rarely struggling because they needed more information. They were experienced professionals who already knew a great deal about their work, their clients, and their industries.

What they often lacked was something less obvious: regular access to people who understood enough about their situation to ask thoughtful questions, probe assumptions, share relevant experience, and help them see what they could not easily see on their own.

The longer someone worked independently, the more important that insight became.

What We've Learned

Experience Does Not Eliminate the Need for Perspective

Experience gives us knowledge and judgment, but it can also make our own assumptions harder to recognize.

Independent professionals make important decisions every day about clients, pricing, opportunities, priorities, relationships, and the direction of their businesses. There is rarely one objectively correct answer.

Outside perspective does not replace individual judgment. It strengthens it.

Collective Intelligence Helps Us See More Clearly

No single person brings every relevant experience or perspective to a decision.

When experienced professionals explore a challenge together, they contribute different questions, experiences, and ways of seeing the situation. The objective is not to reach consensus or tell someone what to do.

The value comes from helping each person see more clearly so that they can make their own better-informed decisions.

Better Decisions Require Reflection

Independent professionals spend much of their time doing: serving clients, solving problems, developing business, and responding to whatever needs their attention next.

Reflection creates the opportunity to step outside that activity long enough to notice patterns, question assumptions, and determine what matters most.

Sometimes the most valuable next step is not doing more. It is creating enough space to decide what deserves to be done.

Better Decision-Making Becomes More Powerful Through Practice

One thoughtful conversation can change how someone sees a problem. The greater value comes when reflection, perspective, and accountability become ongoing practices.

Over time, people develop shared context. Conversations become deeper. Questions become more relevant. Members learn how one another think, what they are working toward, and where they may need a different perspective.

That is when collective intelligence becomes especially powerful.

What This Means for Smashing the Plateau

Everything we do is shaped by what we have learned from experienced independent professionals

We create ideas and conversations that encourage reflection. We provide structure that helps people clarify what matters most. We create opportunities for independent professionals to think alongside people who bring different experiences and perspectives.

The objective is not to provide all the answers.

It is to create the conditions in which experienced independent professionals can exercise their own judgment more effectively.

Because the decisions we make about our businesses affect much more than our businesses. They influence how we spend our time, the work we choose to pursue, the people with whom we work, and ultimately the lives we are able to build.

That is why Smashing the Plateau exists: to help experienced independent professionals make better decisions so they can build businesses that support the lives they want.
